S&F: The Art of Etsy
How to shop local, micro brands, new designers, and more!
What we have all been waiting for, the guide to Etsy.
Some of you might not know this but Etsy is a market place with numerous vendors… Just like your favorite e-commerce platform (IE - Net-A-Porter , Net sells brands from all over the world and at the end of the day it’s just a showcasing platform… just like Etsy).
A bit more details on Etsy: it’s one large marketplace with stores within it. So the stores are selling merchandise that they essentially could have in store if they wanted to have a retail space. When people say “support small businesses,” you can just go to Etsy and purchase a few things from a business on Etsy. Additionally, I love that Etsy has sellers from all over the world, allowing you to shop vintage from London, Paris, and Beyond.
Etsy is honestly the best for vintage denim, household stuff, cotton tees, vintage dresses or blouses (I’m talking like YSL from the 80s!), jewelry, and so much more. The best way to find the coolest stuff is by keyword searching—like ‘Levi's’ or ‘Vases’—basically, anything you’re into and hoping to buy. Once your search results appear, don’t just favorite the item; check out the seller’s page and either follow their storefront or browse through what else they’re selling. I think I’ve pretty much covered everything Etsy, but as someone who is obsessed with vintage jeans, I have to share a couple of tips about sizing—because if you’re usually a 26 in denim, you are definitely not a 26 in vintage Levi’s. I always go up two or three sizes from my regular when I’m searching for Levi’s, and honestly, that’s the best move if you’re buying from sellers with no returns. For example, I’m a 26/27, but when I buy Levi’s, I’m always looking at 28x30 or 29x30, sometimes even 30x30 (I’m not picky about length—anything from 29 to 32 works for me).
